Whether you're a musician yourself or you want to work somewhere in the background of the music field, there are plenty of job opportunities. Before you get started, however, you need to know what it takes, define your goals and put in plenty of hard work.

Music Industry Jobs

When most people think of a career in music, they picture rock stars and pop stars on stage in front of thousands of people. While that's certainly one option, it's definitely not the only one, and it's not the most common. People who work in the music industry may work for a record label in jobs ranging from talent scouting to marketing to publicity. You may work at a radio station as a producer or DJ. You might work in a school teaching music to children or adults, or you may work as a music therapist. Songwriters, session musicians, background singers, engineers, composers and conductors are all job positions to consider if you have the talent. You may also work as a music journalist, or you could become a manager or agent for an artist.

Define Your Goals and Create a Plan

Knowing that there are so many job options in the music field, the first thing you need to do is make a plan. Define your goals based on your talents and interests, and figure out what it takes to reach them. Perhaps that means learning to play an instrument, taking some classes, getting a degree, singing in the church choir, playing live gigs or getting an entry-level job or internship. Once you've established the first step, decide what the next one will be. Create a realistic path that gets you to the ultimate goal. Having smaller goals along the way can keep you from feeling defeated when something doesn't go exactly as planned.

Practice Your Skill

No matter which music job you want to tackle, practice makes perfect. If you want to work with kids as a music therapist, spend time volunteering or working in a school or daycare while you're getting your degree. If you want to be a songwriter, make time to write each day. If you want to be a singer, sign up for lessons and sing in public every chance you get. Dedicate yourself to getting better through practice, much like an athlete would.

Put Yourself Out There and Make Connections

If you work in the music business, you have to be a people person. Many times, you can get a job through the connections you make. No matter how important the person is, if he or she works in the industry, you can build a relationship — but keep it genuine. Live gigs, internships and taking classes are great ways to do this. Eventually, you may even want to build a team of people you can rely on.

Take Risks

Last but not least, if you want to work in the music field, you have to be willing to take risks, especially if you want to work on the performance side of things. Don't be afraid to sing or play your instrument in front of a crowd. Don't be afraid to introduce yourself to the songwriter you'd like to work with or the record label executive whom you admire.
